Hynes family history states that William R. Hynes is a son of Revolutionary War soldier Thomas Hynes, who was born March 4, 1741 at Coleraine, Ireland. Thomas and younger brother Col. Andrew Hynes traveled to Kentucky in 1779, and landed where Louisville now sets. They lived there until they moved into the fort at Salt River, 3/4 mile north of Shepherdsville. Thomas Hynes died May 5, 1796 at Lick Creek, Nelson County, Kentucky. The 250 acres, land on Lick Creek where Thomas Hynes died, was sold by his son, Andrew Hynes, to Tuel and was known for many years as the Tuel farm.

Thomas Hynes married Abigail Rose in 1767. Abigail was born in 1747 in Maryland, the daughter of Daniel Rose. Abigail died in her 75th year on December 4, 1821 at Bardstown, Kentucky. Abigail was a cripple for many years, the result of a fall from a curbstone in Bardstown. Thomas Hynes was a son of William and Hannah Hynes. William Hynes was born November 6, 1714 at Coleraine, Ireland. Hynes researchers state that Hannah's last name may have been Coomes or some variation of that spelling. William Hynes died in Washington County, Maryland in November 1780. Hannah Hynes next married James Barnes who owned land in Washington County, Maryland after he had resided in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. James Barnes died in 1795 and Hannah died ca. 1804. Both died in Nelson County, Kentucky, but their burial location is unknown.

William Rose Hynes was married (1) November 16, 1800 to Elizabeth Lawrence, who died June 1, 1814. William next married (2) Barbara Chenault on December 22, 1814 in Bardstown. Barbara died June 1, 1856 at Greenville, Illinois and is buried there. William R. Hynes was the father of 19 children and adopted 2 more.

William R. Hynes was the nephew of Colonel Andrew Hynes, founder of Elizabethtown, owner of the Hynes House, now the Talbott Tavern. William entered into a commercial store business with Col. Hynes.

William R. Hynes was "Elder" in the Bardstown Presbyterian Church for many years and kept the Session Record Book in his own meticulous hand.

William R. Hynes was one of the executors of the very large estate of his uncle, Colonel Andrew Hynes, who died in 1800 at his home in Bardstown, Kentucky and was buried nearby in Hynes-Talbott Cemetery in Bardstown.

Wm. R. Hynes signed as witness when claims were settled by administrator William Kendall in the estate of James Barnes of Nelson County, Kentucky on January 14, 1807. Wm.'s great aunt, Hannah Hynes, was last married to James Barnes.
