The son of George & Catherine (Stambaugh) Wilkinson, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Franklin Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. He married Elizabeth Kinter and fathered Margaret V. (b. 03/13/64 - married George C. Slaybaugh), Tillie E. (b. 09/16/66 - married a Groscost [?]), Kate E. (b. @1867), Anna Linda (b. 01/19/68 - married a Miller), Charles William (b. 06/19/75), and Robert (b. @1879).

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. G, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 10, 1865. Bates spells his surname "Wilkerson."

In 1880, he lived in Oxford Township, Adams County, and in 1890, in Berwick Township, Adams County, where he died at age 75-1-12 from "chronic interstitial nephritis" leading to "uremia."
