Civil War Union Army Officer. He joined the Union war effort when he was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company A, 1st United States Sharp Shooters ("Berdan's Sharpshooters") on September 3, 1861. On September 22, 1862 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment, and he was in command of the unit when he was killed in action on November 30, 1863 at Mine Run, Virginia.
