Harrison enlisted at Sarepta with Co. D., 31st MS Infantry. He was sick while the unit was camped at Mt. Tippah, 15 miles south of Holly Springs, MS. The weather was cold, and Harrison was laying near a fire to keep warm. Several guns was stacked in an upright position around a tree. One of the guns fell and discharged, hitting Harrison in the leg. He was taken to Pittsboro in a buggy, arriving there in the middle of night. He was taken to the home of Elbert Murphree, his brother-in-law and sheriff of Calhoun County. He died in Elbert's home from blood poisoning, which developed from the wound. His wife and children moved to Pittsboro after his death. Benjamin Harrison and wife are buried in the Rocky Mount cemetery. Benjamin has a CSA marker.
