Angus Ferguson grew-up in North Dumfries, now Cambridge, Ontario, then emigrated to the U.S. as a young man in 1848. Angus was a carpenter and machinist. He worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1890.

Angus was married twice. His first wife, Laura Gale, died at age 33 after giving birth to their sixth child in 1884. Angus then married Elizabeth McWhirter from Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland. They remained together until Angus's death in 1911.

Angus had four surviving children from his first marriage to Laura Gale Ferguson. They were: Allan Angus (1873-1964), Henry Gale (1876-1954), Elizabeth Ethelyn (1880-1965) and Mabel Claire (1881-1968).
