Served in WWII in the Navy, aboard the USS Aldebaron. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, for heroism for his involvement in rescueing most of the crew of the sinking LCT-1052. They saved 9 out of 10 lives during a typhoon that caused the LCT to take on water and eventually sink leaving her crew in the water. Grandpa jumped into the sea putting himself between the two ships to help her crew to the rescue boat. Son of Herbert Carl Johanson Heeding and Lillian Poynton Heeding. Brother to William Heeding. Husband to Jeanette Qualls. Father of three, grandfather of seven, numerous great-grandchildren. Worked for Wonder Bread for 30 + years.
Spent many years hunting "the big one" and now as per the pic they come to him. The buck in the pic is often sitting next to or right on grandpa's headstone. I will always remember the great hunting trips as a family and miss not having grandpa there to continue. I will always remember our family trips to Yellowstone every summer, and getting to go down to the convenience store to pick up the Sunday paper in grandpa's old Chevy pick up when I would spend the night at their house.
Grandpa fought the infection that gradually took his spirit for six months. He fought hard to stay with grandma and the rest of us. Eventually we had to tell him it was alright to go if he had to and his spirit slipped from his body two hours later.
