Grandfather Stewart, Frank, was a remarkable man. He was a small and spry man with a heavy thatch of curly white hair when he retired after 30 years working as a rural mail carrier.

He feared his God and loved his family with deep devotion. He never understood the difference between the internal combustion engine and the horse. He would remove both hands from the steering wheel to point out something and Grandmother Clara would gently remind him to pay attention to his driving. Many years later he would give his auto, a 1934 Plymouth, to his brother Dodger.

He was also an inventor of devices including an auto window defroster, and automatic coal chute, and a grave 'filler-inner'.

Frank's gardens were well known in Springfield. Some of his gardens were small, but most were extremely large, well tended and lovely.

Grandmother Clara died in 1941. Frank remarried in 1943 to Iva Darrell, from Galena, MO.

Grandfather lived a full and rich life. He died May 6, 1960, at the age of 89. On that night he was unable to breathe and an ambulance was called. He walked to the door to meet the attendants and said "Ok boys, I'm ready". He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
