[NEWTON WHITTELSEY, b. at South Farms, Conn., Oct. 31, 1777; became deacon in the church and postmaster at Cornish Flats, N. H., where he lived until the latter part of his life. Mr. Whittelsey was justice of the peace, trustee of the Kimball Union academy for twenty-six years, four years of which he was secretary of their board of directors; he was often called upon by the townspeople to settle estates, etc., as he had acquired much legal knowledge, and with his strictly honest business principles the people recognized the unapproachable character of the man and trusted their all to him. July 4, 1800, m. Esther Robbins, daughter of Samuel and Salome (Lee) Robbins of Sutton, Mass., b. Jan. 29, 1777, at Torringford, Conn., who d. April 15, 1818, by whom he had four children, born at Cornish, N. H. He again m., May 20, 1821, Maria S. Mills, b. Dec. 2, 1794. Mr. Whittelsey d. at Claremont, N. H., May 23, 1844. Mrs. Maria Whittelsey d. Oct. 20, 1893, at Raleigh, N. C.

Children, first marriage, were:
1. Mary Lydia, b. June 7, 1801, at Cornish Flat, N. H.; m. Nov. 18, 1839, Philander Chase Huggins, a merchant of Cornish, N. H. Mrs. Huggins d. at Bunker Hill, Ill., Nov. 11, 1845. They had one child who died in infancy.
2. Esther Mills, b. at Cornish Flat, N. H., Jan. 30, 1805; m. Aug. 30, 1824, at Cornish Flat, N. H., Rev. Israel Newell, b. April 5, 1795, who died at Durham, Me., Feb. 8, 1846. Mrs. N. d. at Minneapolis, Minn., May 24, 1873.
3. Lucy Ann, b. at Cornish Flat, N. H., Oct. 13, 1806; d. unm. at Bunker Hill, Ill., May 28, 1842.
4. Caroline Hale, b. May 13, 1809; m. Wm. H. Cheney.

Children, second marriage, were:
5. Helen Maria, b. at Cornish Flat, N. H., Nov. 28, 1823; m. at Auburndale, Mass., Aug. 23, 1849, Samuel J. Stevens, b. Aug. 23, 1821; d. at Raleigh, N. C., April 26, 1875; Mr. Stevens was a teacher; a soldier in the Confederate army. Mrs. Stevens d. at Raleigh, N. C., Dec. 5, 1896. They had two children.
6. Henry Newton, b. Sept. 25, 1827; m. Anna C. Fowle.
