Five U.S. Army Air Forces crewmembers with the 2nd Ferrying Command went missing in Newfoundland after departing Harmon Field, near Stephenville, manning a British Royal Air Force B-24D Liberator III (#BZ935). They were to ferry the airplane to Reykjavík, Iceland.

When they failed to report to Gander station, a 6-day search was conducted by RCAF and USAAF aircraft, but with no results.
In June, 1947, the missing airplane was discovered by loggers. It had crashed in a near vertical dive close to Gaff Topsail, a railroad camp roughly 85 miles west of Gander.

The crew killed were:

1st Lt. Cecil M Dorsett, O-489990, MD
1st Lt. Graham L McBride, O-667170, AZ
2nd Lt. Oakley E Hess, O-793619, WV
Sgt. Raymond F Mennig, 33328375, PA
S/Sgt. Joseph W Wiant, 35405981, OH
