Son of John Waite, Sr. and Dorothy Waite who resided in Rumford, Maine.

John served as a Sergeant & Gunner on B-26B #42-96113, 585th Bomber Squadron, 394th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Middlesex County, Massachusetts prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 31, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of paper and pulp and also as Single, without dependents.

B-26B #42-96113 took off from Station 455, England on an operational mission to Nogent Sur Seine, France. They were hit and shot down by German ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed near Lisieux, France during the war.

John was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on June 22, 1950.

Service # 11097989

John was mistakenly noted as being from Oxford County, Maine (where his parents resided) on the "Honor List of Dead & Missing of World War II" at archives.

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
