Architect. A native of San Francisco, his career began in 1907 when he was hired by the architectural firm of Miller and Colmesnil. In 1912 he designed his first building, the Our Lady of the Wayside Church in Portola Valley, which would be designated a California State Historic Landmark in 1977. In 1922, he was commissioned by the Nasser brothers to design what became one of his most well known projects, San Francisco's landmark Castro Theatre. Other projects for which he is remembered for include the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company Building (1925), the Paramount Theatre in Oakland (1931), the Top of the Mark lounge at San Francisco's Mark Hopkins Hotel (1939), and the I. Magnin Building (1946). In 1933 he was appointed chairman of the committee of consulting architects supervising the construction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and later was one of several architects who designed buildings for the Golden Gate International Exposition held on Treasure Island from 1939 until 1940. In 1942 he designed Union Square Plaza's parking garage, which would be the first multi-level underground parking garage ever constructed.
