John R. "Muggs" Hamilton, 95, of Gilman, died Thursday (June 30, 2005) at Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka.


Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Redenius Funeral Home in Gilman. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Sheldon Cemetery. Pastor Doug Maris will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Gilman Fire Department or the donor's choice.


Mr. Hamilton was born April 30, 1910 in Concord Township, Iroquois, the son of Joseph and Helen L. Clark Hamilton.
He spent his childhood in Iroquois County and attended rural Rhode Island schools.
He moved to Gilman in 1942. His wife, the former Mary Elle Coughenour, whom he married Nov. 7, 1931 in Kankakee, died Feb. 21, 1989.

He was a member of Odd Fellow Lodge for 50 years, an honorary member of the Gilman Fire Department from 1947-1975 and enjoyed hunting, being on a bowling league and Odd Fellow events. He was a mechanic, first working for Hamilton Bros. in Watseka then for International Harvester for 32 years, retiring in 1970.


Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Burl and Joyce Hamilton, James Lowell and Mary Hamilton, all of Gilman; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Janette Garfield of Watseka; one brother-in-law, Frank Coughenour of Sheldon; and several nieces and nephews.


Two brothers, Joe B. and Glen C. Hamilton; and one sister, Eleanor Sites, are deceased.
