Julie Anne Sassano-Robbins died Dec. 7, 2008, after battling breast cancer for over 12 years. She was born in Helena on Nov. 23, 1954, to Michael and Armelda Sassano.

She attended kindergarten at 804 Dearborn in the basement of Mrs. Perry's home, which was later owned by her uncle and aunt, James and Nancy Phillips. She attended first through eighth grades at Bishop Gilmore Catholic School and graduated in 1973 from Helena High School.

She began her career with "Ma" Bell as a telephone operator in Helena, and in 1979 transferred to Denver. She continued her career with the phone company and worked her way into management and later retired as an engineer from Qwest Communications after 30 years of service.

While employed at the phone company, she worked on many projects. One of her favorite jobs was when she was the project engineer for the telecommunications systems at Mile High Stadium in Denver.

While working as a telephone professional, she and her husband, John, raised their three children, Ian, Kristina and Kacey. She was an avid supporter of her children's school, sports and religious activities. She was especially proud of her fundraising activities that supported Arvada youth sports. Her favorite fundraising activity was working at the Pepsi Center.

She was an active member of Crossroads Church, Denver. She always enjoyed working the annual Christmas tea, Mothers of Pre-Schoolers (MOP) and the annual women's retreat.

Julie found happiness in all outdoor activities, including sunbathing, boating, horseback riding and softball. Her biggest love was spending time with her family, cooking for family and friends and shopping for special gifts. She spent her vacations visiting her family in Montana and traveling to the East Coast to visit her brother who serves on active duty.

Throughout her lengthy illness, she inspired others by her strength and never asked, "Why me?" She loved everyone she knew and was loved in return.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jo Sassano.

She is survived by her husband, John Robbins; children, Ian Anderson, Kristina Robbins and Kacey (Tim) Boyle; her parents, Michael and Armelda Sassano; her sisters and brothers, Nikki (Joe) DeWolf, Jan (Steve) Kalgaard, Gina (Mark) Dowdy, Pat (Amy) Sassano, all of Helena, and Mike (Deb) Sassano of Fort Bragg, N.C. Julie is also survived by nieces and nephews, Ray (Drenda) Carlson, Brian and Paul Kalgaard, Michaela, Connor, Josephine, Luke and Will Dowdy, Colin, Cale and Cohen Sassano, Alexander and Angelina Sassano; and two great-nephews, Robert and Wesley Carlson.

Visitation is set from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Retz Funeral Home. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Cathedral of St. Helena with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be held in the Brondel Center of the Cathedral immediately following the burial.
