Husband of Lillian G. Short who resided in Avon, Massachusetts.

Donald served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-26B #42-96113, 585th Bomber Squadron, 394th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Bristol County, Massachusetts and was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on January 16, 1941, prior to the war, from Camp Myles Standish, Taunton, Massachusetts. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

He enlisted in the Army on May 13, 1942 at Fort Jay, Governor's Island, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Waiter and also as Single, without dependents.

B-26B #42-96113 took off from Station 455, England on an operational mission to Nogent Sur Seine, France. They were hit and shot down by German ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed near Lisieux, France during the war.

Donald was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on June 22, 1950.

Service # 20113522

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
