Son of Jehiel Hildreth Woodruff and Sarah Ann Davis, husband of Alida Jane Campbell Sweezey, and father of Marjory Davis Woodruff.

Charles M. Woodruff, a prominent resident of Bellport, while laying on his Brookhaven property last week, found a large old land turtle marked by his father in 1851. The turtle was snugly hidden under a stack of hay, in removing which, Mr. Woodruff discovered it. This must have been quite a fad with the elder Mr. Woodruff, for his son in 1877 found another turtle in the same lot marked by his father, Jehiel, in 1844. It is a custom with Long Island boys, while on their Sunday walks, when they find a turtle, to carve their name or initials on its shell, then let it go on a journey, only to be found in after years by some relatives, and call up tender memories, as in the case of Mr. Woodruff, or by some stranger, who will wonder who the owner of the name or letters was. The land on which the turtle was found has been in the Woodruff family for generations. Brooklyn Times.

Obituary - Charles M. Woodruff, brother of Dr. Alden J. Woodruff, of this village, died at the home of the latter, on Main Street last night after an illness of several months duration. He came to Babylon a fortnight or so ago in a very serious condition and in spite of the fact that every possible effort was made to save his life he continued to sink and passed away as stated. Death was caused by an absess of the liver. The deceased was born in Bellport 59 years ago and was a son of the late Alden and Sarah (Davis) Woodruff. The deceased had always resided in the town of his birth and was for many years engaged in the butcher business at Bellport. He was a Republican in politics and two years ago was elected a justice of the peace of the town of Brookhaven on that ticket. For nine years he was a member of the Bellport Board of Education. He was a widower, his wife having died three years ago. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bertha Fassett, wife of Principal H.L. Fassett of the highschool at Troy. Another daughter, Marjorie, died some years ago, from the effects of vaccination. The remains will be taken to Bellport tomorrow and the funeral will be held from the late residence of the deceased on Sunday. The remains are to be laid to rest in the Davis family burying ground at Middle Island.
