He was born Sept. 7, 1923, in Cave, W. Va., a son of the late George Earl and Lena Mae Rexrode Harper.
He was a longtime member of Basic United Methodist Church, where he was active in various capacities. A veteran with the Marine Corps, serving during World War II, he was a civic-minded citizen. Les was a retired bank manager, and was an active member of the Masonic Lee Lodge No. 209 of Waynesboro, and the Scottish Rite in Fork Union. He was a taxidermy hobbyist.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Caroline Carr Harper of Waynesboro; two sisters, Kathryn M. Humphreys and husband, Bill, of Waynesboro and Mary June Brown of Atlanta; two brothers, Leo C. Harper of San Antonio, Texas, and Robert E. Harper and wife, Lina, of Fishersville; a special uncle, Edward Furr; four nieces and their husbands, Sharon and David Johnson, Sara and Wendell Alexander, Stacey and Darrell Hayes, and Mary Donna and Steve Olsen; and two nephews, Jay Humphreys IV and wife, Meg, and Phillip Harper.
