JAMES SEAVEY DEAD; SON OF LANE PIONEERS
James Walter Seavey, 87, son of Lane County pioneer settlers Alexander and Sarah Seavey, died Jan. 7 at his home in Forest Grove near Portland.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Eugene.
Mr. Seavey was born May 14, 1873 on his father's ranch north of Springfield, one of six children. For many years, he raised hops at the family ranch, and later operated several farms throughout Oregon, forming the J. W. Seavey Hop Co., with offices in Portland.
His father, Alexander Seavey, arrived in Oregon by mule train from California after rounding Cape Horn in an early sailing vessel. His mother was the former Sarah Ann Blachly, after whose brother, William Blachly the community of Blachly was named, according to family sources. She crossed the plains to Oregon in a covered wagon as a girl of 16.
Mr. Seavey lived on the fqamily ranch in Lane County most of his life. He was preceeded(sic) in death by both his first and second wives.
For the past six months, he resided in Forest Grove, having moved there after living in Portland for 13 years, following his Lane County residency.
He was once an active sportsman and was a four-time winner of an Oregon Stte Trapshooting award. He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Mr. Seavey is survived by one brother and one sister, John H. Seavey of Eugene and Mrs. Allwilda Wassom of Coburg; one son, Alexander Seavey of the Springfield area; two grandsons and one granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services Friday will be followed by interment in Rest Haven Memorial Park. The England Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
