In addition to farming, Lawrence supplemented his farm income by doing odd jobs, trucking hay, working as a Culligan water man, etc. Lawrence retired from farming after their youngest daughter Carol graduated from high school in 1962. Lawrence and Mabel migrated to Lake Placid, Florida in the winter where Lawrence surveyed for the Army Corps of Engineers, while Mabel often worked in jobs such as packing fruit. In the late spring, they moved back to the family farm in Minnesota. They maintained this migratory pattern for 36 years. Mabel and Lawrence spent the last years of their life in the nursing home in Belgrade, Stearns County, Minnesota, where he died on February 16, 2004. They had two daughters, Pauline Ann(b. 1939) and Carol May (b. 1944).
