Bertis Hayward Adams spent his final week at the Millbury Health Care Center, located on land formerly owned by his family, within view of his birthplace and childhood home at 310 Millbury Avenue.
Born September 26, 1918, in Millbury, the son of Bertis Hayward Adams and Edith Simonds Adams, Mr. Adams was a 1937 graduate of Millbury High School and a 1939 graduate of the Wentworth Institute of Technology.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served on the East Coast of the United States and the Pacific and achieved the rank of Machinist 1st grade. Upon his return, he was employed by GTE and worked in the Needham and Westborough facilities for 24 years. He helped found the American Institute of Plant Engineers and served as its president for two years.
Mr. Adams moved to Westborough in 1947 and later became a Certified Tree Farmer at Hardscrabble Farm. Longtime residents of Warren Street recall him contentedly riding his tractor across the fields and tending to his cattle, often after putting in a full day of work at GTE. Bertis Adams Way and its adjoining roads were formerly part of his farm. He was deeply committed to his community and was a member of the Westborough Grange, of American Legion Post 163 of Westborough, of Siloam Lodge AF and AM of Westborough, and of the Aleppo Temple of the Worcester County Shrine Club. On his last birthday, in 2006, he was honored for his 60 years in the Masonic Lodge.
Always devoted to the richness of the land, and never one to mind hard work, Mr. Adams owned and operated tree farms in Westborough and Sharon, VT until his death. In 1980, the official Massachusetts State House Christmas tree was from his land. One of his greatest joys was having family gather at his farm in Sharon to share stories of the days when his ancestors made their home there.
He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Barbara E. (Goldstein) Bloom Adams, daughter Barrie E. Adams Montross and her husband, John, of Red Hook, NY; daughter-in-law Ryan Schmiesing Adams of Wilder, VT; stepdaughter Lois J. Shaevel and her husband, William, of Jamaica Plain; stepson Fredrick D. Bloom of NYC; brother, Dr. Howard C. Adams of Athol and his wife, Margaret; sister Eleanor Adams Crecca of Vista, CA, and her husband, Robert; and sister in law, Charlotte Adams of Exeter, N.H.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Clayton W. Adams and Bradford S. Adams, and by his son, Bertis H. (Woody) Adams III.
He left five grandsons: Michael A. Adams of London, England, Anthony H. Adams of Hong Kong, Joshua F. Adams of Casa Grande, AZ, Matthew H. Montross of Waterbury, VT, and Benjamin L. Montross of Red Hook, NY; three step-grandchildren, Jordana Estner of Portland, OR, Hillary Estner of Denver, CO, and Jacob Estner of Jamaica Plain; and five great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life was held in the Evangelical Congregational Church, West Main St., Westborough on Saturday, June 30, 2007, at 1 p.m. Burial arrangements were private.
Donations may be sent to the Westborough Fire Department, 42 Milk St., and the Westborough Food Pantry, PO Box 502, Westborough, MA 01581
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St.
