Clarence D. Fields, 98, of Springfield, died September 15, 2006, in Christian Health Center in Lebanon. He was born on December 21, 1907, in Avawam, Ky., to Walter E. and Polly M. Campbell Fields. He was united in marriage with Sybil Hill on September 12, 1936. Sybil preceded him in death in 1978. Clarence joined the Army in 1926, serving in the infantry at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., Tientsin, China (from 1932-35) and Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He transferred to the Quartermaster Corps in 1939, serving in it until he retired as a Major from active military service in 1947. Clarence worked in construction in the Springfield area from the early 1950s to 1970. He served as President of the Laborer's International Union of North America, AFL-CIO, Local No. 676, from 1956 to 1970. Clarence is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as numerous grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services for Clarence Fields will be 10 a.m.Tuesday, September 18, 2006, in Greenlawn Funeral Home South. Burial will be in the National Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation for family and friends will be 1 hour prior to services.
