She was the paternal grandchild of Alexander Romulus Duncan I and Sabrina Durham; and gr-grandchild of Henry Duncan (b. ca. 1770) who came to Johnston County from Granville County ca. 1790 and married Keziah Christian Avera/Averyt of Johnston County.
Nina was 20 years old on May 28, 1901 when she married 25-old Wilfred Ivanhoe "Ivan" Whitely, an up and coming merchant in Clayton. The couple would have 9 known children. (See husband's memorial.)
Ivan would eventually become a successful businessman opening the Clayton Department Store, which was damaged by the great Clayton fire of 1926. He later went out the road as a traveling hat salesman (c. 1930).
Nina was widowed in 1949 when her husband of 47 years passed at age 73. She survived another 26 years, passing in 1975, at age 94. They are both buried in Clayton City Cemetery with two of their children: Wilfred H. "Gus" Whitley (1902-1964) and Yvanne Whitley (1925-1941).
