Kate's parents were John Wise Bagwell and Mary Ann Connelly Bagwell. Kate married Frank Rozel Whittington in Baltimore, on September 30, 1895.

According to her youngest daughter, Lalide Kathleen Whittington, her mother's first name was actually spelled with a K (Katherine), but at the time people kept spelling it with a C. She gave up on correcting people and end up spelling it with a C (Catherine).

Also, Lalide said her middle name was Eliza. The 1910 Baltimore, Maryland census indicated Eliza as well.
