Mrs. Frances E. Booker Sinks Peacefully to Rest Last Saturday
Shortly before the noon hour last Saturday, Frances E., the beloved wife of William H. Booker Died at the family home at Rough & Ready, after a brief illness.
Frances Elmira Booker was born near Binghamton, Broome County, New York, April 25, 1838. In 1855, with her family, she came to California, by water and across the Isthmus, and settled on the Ferguson place on Rough & Ready Creek. On July 8, 1857, she was happily married to William H. Booker, and he took his bride to the home where she died, having lived almost continuously on the homestead over 52 years. Possessed of cordial qualities and gracious manners, pure in life and character, the sacred precincts of that home in which she lived for over half a century could not have been other than the abode of peace and love, endeared by affection and hallowed by the joy and sorrows shared with husband and children and borne together under the shelter of its roof. Mrs. Booker was devoted to home and its duties, but she gathered about her hosts of warm, personal friends. The immense throng that gathered last Sunday at the home, and at the little Morgan Chapel cemetery, where her mortal remains were committed to the dust, attested the hold she had on the hearts of that people.
The funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. J. J. N. Kenny, of Fresno, a minister of the Methodist Church South. He pronounced a beautiful eulogy on the life and character of the deceased. "Oh Summer Land" was sung by Mrs. D. W. Berger, and "Beyond the Weeping and the Sighing" by Mr. W. S. Chambers. The pall-bearers were: W. S. Chambers, George Sharrock, William Richards, William Bostater, S. T. Rablen and X. Fassler.
The surviving relatives, aside from the bereft husband, are: Clara L. Meginity, of Oakdale; Mrs. J. A. Shipe, of Berkeley; Mrs. H. J. Taylor, Fresno; Wm. E. Booker, E. F. Booker, Jamestown; James T. Booker, Los Angeles; Walter W. Booker, Berkeley; J. A. Booker and Lestle E. Booker, Sonora.
