David Behan was 23, and living in Delaware Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 23, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861.

Behan became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 14, 1863, along with most of his company.

During his term of service, Behan was promoted from Private to 6th Corporal on Aug 1, 1862; to 5th Corporal on Oct 1, 1861; to 4th Corporal on Jan 1, 1863; to 5th Sergeant on Dec 15, 1864; and finally to 4th Sergeant on May 1, 1865.

Behan applied for his pension on April 7, 1884. His application is #510,201, and his certificate #532,136. After his death, his wife applied for her widow's pnsion. Her application if #951,938, and his certificate #712,196.
