According to word received August 5 by Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Gunderson, former residents of Iowa City, Ia., now living at 1616 Sioux, their son, S/Sgt Jerome A Gunderson, jr. was lost on a mission to Ludswigshafen, Germany, July 31, 1944.
On Gunderson's tenth mission as a radio-gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber, another bomber in the formation, apparently damaged by flak and out of control, hit his plane, causing it to go into a flat spin. The plane crashed at Dittweiler, Germany, about 55 miles east of Ludwigshafen.
A former student at the University of Iowa and member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Gunderson enlisted in the air corps in February, 1943, and went overseas June 2, 1944 with the Eighth air force. His mother was presented last January with the air medal which the 21 year-old sergeant had won.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Ted, and a sister, Jo Ann.
