She was born April 22, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois, to Michael B. and Mary Bowman Doyle.
Elisabeth received her BA and MA in history from Indiana University. She then became the first female to receive a Ph.D. in Civil War history from Louisiana State University.
Elisabeth published numerous articles about the history of the Catholic Church, Air Force history, and Civil War history. She retired from St. John's University as an associate professor in history in 1978, a post she had held for 15 years. After her retirement from St. John's, Elisabeth moved to Covington, Louisiana, where she spent countless hours assisting the St. Joseph's Abbey in St. Benedict, Louisiana, as an Elder Hostess.
She leaves behind her sister, Mary Pat Doyle of Bloomington; nephew Michael B. Doyle and his wife Elizabeth of Pensacola, Florida; niece Mary Katherine Sprague and her husband Michael of Baldwin, Missouri; nephew Patrick Doyle of Boca Raton, Florida; nephew Peter E. Donohue and his wife Shirley of Montgomery, Alabama; and nephew, James R. Donohue of Atlanta, Georgia.
Elisabeth was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard B. Doyle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 19, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul Catholic Center, Bloomington, where friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old Highway 37, is handling arrangements.
