The male lead in a high school play collapsed and died on stage Friday night, May 1, as 1,000 persons in the audience watched.

James C. Smith, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul M. Smith, wasn't an actor. He was an engineering trades student at DeVry Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois.

Six weeks ago a friend of his from Alvernia High School in Chicago asked him if he would help in a production of "Up the Down Staircase," which the school was staging.

Alvernia is an all-girl Catholic school. It had to cast male characters from several high schools and colleges in the area.

Jim played the key role of an unruly student in the drama which is about a ghetto school.

On Friday night, May 1, Jim walked onto stage on cue, as he had done in the school's three previous performances. He uttered his opening lines, then collapsed.

The play was halted and he was taken to Belmont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of undetermined causes.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 5 at St. John's church, Johnsburg, Minnesota.

The entire cast and directors of the play were in attendance at the funeral service thus according a fine tribute to a young man so willing to be of help in the successful production of their play "Up the Down Staircase".
