Evelyn was the youngest of twelve siblings. She attended Whitworth College in Brookhaven, MS, and afterwards her brother Jap sent her to Baltimore to a finishing school. She was a very pretty young woman. Evelyn spent many of the years after her husband's untimely death living with her mother in their East Court Street home in Brookhaven, serving as hostess for family gatherings. She was generous with help to her many nieces sewing ruffles, laces and bows for their evening dresses. Until her death in 1959, Evelyn delighted in frequent visits to her grandchildren.
