DEATH NOTICE: The Manti Messenger, Saturday 12 July 1902:
Orson H. Paulsen of Ephraim Goes to Bottom of Pond.
Orson H. Paulsen, a 19-year-old boy who lives in Ephraim, was drowned on Saturday in a
pond on the Auerbach ranch about nine miles northwest of this city. He went beyond his
depth and before help could reach him his life had been strangled out.
The unfortunate boy was with Niels P. Jensen, a friend who has charge of the ranch.
The latter is an expert swimmer, but knowing that young Paulsen could swim only
moderately well, he warned him against going beyond his depth. But he did not heed the
warning and the first thing Jensen knew his companion was crying for help from the middle
of the pool. Jensen swam to him as quickly as possible, but before he could be reached he
went down the third time and did not come up again. Jensen rant into a nearby field and
secured the help of two or three men, and after a few minutes' work the body was dragged
out and every effort was made to resuscitate the drowned boy, but they were futile.
Acting Coroner Nielsen was summoned, but after hearing the details of the fatality he
deemed an inquest unnecessary. The remains were then removed to the undertaking
establishment of Joseph William Taylor and prepared for burial. The aged parents of the
deceased were notified and they came here and took the remains to Ephraim today, where
interment took place.
It is said that Paulsen was one of the most exemplary young men in Ephraim, and his
untimely death is the occasion of a general sorrow in that community. – News.
