Staff Sergeant, 372nd Bomb Squadron, 307th Bomb Group, 13th Air Force.


Aerial gunner and assistant engineer aboard B-24J Liberator #44-40603.


Shot down by anti aircraft artillery fire over the target area, of Japanese-occupied Koror Town, Palau, in the Southwest Pacific. The airplane took a direct hit to the fuel tanks and burst into flames. The crew jettisoned their bombs, but moments later, both wings separated and all eleven crew were killed when the bomber crashed into Koror Town.


As of 2024, the separated right wing and still attached № 3 engine can be seen in the clear water of the Koror Town lagoon and can be dived upon by underwater explorers.

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Farnum, Sr. now of Morton, Illinois. Sgt. Farnum is a 1941 graduate of Goodfield H.S., and entered the Air Corps on November 23, 1942, and did his training at Harlingen Aerial Gunner School and Keesler Aircraft Mechanics School and was kept in the states for awhile to be an Instructor, but was sent to New Guinea in May of 1944.

Gravesite Details

Postwar, American Graves Registration Service recovered the remains of the aircrew and they were held at the Manila American Cemetery mausoleum. A final group burial took place on January 23, 1951 in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.
