They were then ordered to St. Simon's Island, Georgia, on October 4, 1861. It was mustered into Confederate State service for six months on October 14, 1861, and attached to the 13th Regiment of Georgia Volunteer Infantry, under the command of Colonel C.W. Styles.
It was ordered back to Brunswick on February 17, 1862. Due to the original time having expired, the company was mustered out on March 31, 1862, and reenlisted afterwards. On May 8, 1862, Company H became Company K.
He was admitted to Receiving and Wayside Hospital or General Hospital #9 in Richmond, Virginia, and transferred to General Hospital #22 in Richmond, Virginia, on October 14, 1862, with dysentery.
He was subsequently furloughed for 20 days beginning November 14, 1862, by the Medical Director's Office in Richmond, Virginia. He was granted sick furlough on 05 Nov 1864.
When the war was over, there were only 14 privates left in his entire unit.
His brother, Edmund S. Henderson, was killed at Sharpsburg (Antietam).
He was present with his regiment at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865. He was paroled at Thomasville, Georgia, on May 16, 1865.
John Tyler Henderson applied for a "soldier's pension under Act 1910.
This application stated that his "Company and Regiment surrendered or was " discharged April 9th, 1865.
On Nov 4, 1908 he owned 82 acres of land val. at $600. one mule val 125., 19 cows 100. and all other property $75.00." This application signed by him, and dated Oct 11, 1910.
John and his family lived in Clinch County until 1875.
He moved that year to Coffee County, three miles north of Pearson (now Atkinson, Co.). He was a farmer and a blacksmith. He was also a member of Satilla Lodge, No. 163, F.& A.M. John received Masonic degrees in 1878.
He built the alter, railing, and pulpit of the Sweetwater Methodist Church.
