North - Services for Charles Troy Spires Sr., 51, of 219 Boltin Ave., will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at North United Methodist Church with internment in Riverside Cemetery with full Military Rites. Rev. Matt Rucker will be officiating. Visitation will be 7-9 this evening at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home. Mr. Spires died Wednesday. A native of Neeses, he was son of Naomi Stanfield Spires and the late Eddie Spires.

He was a member of North United Methodist Church and member of North Masonic Lodge 119 AFM, where he was Past Master and member of the American Legion. Master Sergeant Spires joined the S. C. Army National Guard in 1979, after serving in the U. S. Army Reserve. He served in the 163rd Support Battalion in Orangeburg and West Columbia. He served as First Sergeant of the 218th Personnel Service Company in Columbia and was transferred to the Headquarters State Area command S. C. in 1993 where helped establish the Personnel Service Center of the Military Personnel Directorate of the Adjutant General Office in Columbia. Master Sergeant Spires served on Active Duty as First Sergeant during the Persian Gulf War (Desert Storm) in Fort Benning, GA. His awards include the U. S. Meritorious Service Medal, Army commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hourglass and "M" Device, S. C. Exceptional Service Medal, S. C. Achievement Ribbon and the S. C. Governor's Unit Citation. Other service medals and ribbons include the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon and the S.C. Active State Service Medal. Master Sergeant Spires received the Command Sergeant Major's Award upon completion of the U. S. Army Sergeant Major Academy in June 1999, Master Sergeant Spires was admired by all who served with him.

Surviving are his wife, Diane Robinson Spires; daughter, Julie Toole of Springfield; son, Charles Troy Spires Jr. of North; mother of North; sisters, Angie Cook of North; Rose Vella of West Columbia; brother, E. T. Spires of Branchville; grandson, Chandler Toole; granddaughter, Caitlin Toole.
