Mr. Joseph Hanna met his death on Wednesday afternoon last while walking east on the Wabash railroad track. Mr. Hanna had been to dinner, was returning to his work at Dearing's sawmill and seemed to be walking along the main track occupied with his own thoughts when the whistle of the 12:30 fast train warned him of its approach. He stepped off the track, but not far enough and the bracket holding the headlight struck his head fracturing the skull and killed him instantly. The train stopped two hundred feet away, and backing down took the body to the depot, from which point it was carried to Mr. J. J. Heisel's undertaking rooms, and Coroner W. B. Lucas, residing at Mendon summoned to Brunswick by telegraph.
The inquest was held at four o'clock on the day of the accident before a jury composed of the following named: Messrs. L. H. Herring, R. G. Beazley, O. T. Scott, D. C. Basey, Jacob Bruner and L. Moore. A number of witnesses of the accident were examined and the jury found that Joseph Hanna came to his death by being struck by the engine of the 12:30 p.m. east bound train, and said engine was running at a high rate of speed. It was also found that parties in charge of the engine were not giving the usual notice by ringing the bell.
The deceased about thirty years of age, was a son of the late J. N. Hanna, has left a wife in delicate health, and three small children to mourn his loss.
The late Joseph Hanna was a hardworking young man, highly respected by all who knew him, a member of the Sons of Veteran camp and the Knights of Honor, in which order he held a policy for $1,000 life insurance in favor of his wife.
The funeral took place at the Christian church, on Thursday afternoon last, Rev. David Funk and Rev. J. J. Squires officiating. The attendance was large and the interment made in the family plot in Elliott Grove cemetery.
