from his obituary from the Pawtucket Times, June 12, 1952, page 2:

"William Teal dies at 78.
Retired from Coast Guard Service in '24; leaves area kin.
William Teal, 78, of East Providence, a retired coast guardsman who took part in the rescue of more than 1,800 persons during his 28 years service at the Block Island station, died yesterday at his summer home.
Mr. Teal retired in 1924 after putting in all his service at his native Block Island.
During World War I, vessels were ordered to operate close to the shoreline and Mr. Teal remembered one foggy night when seven vessels ran aground off the island.
According to the United Press, his biggest rescue involved a Portuguese liner which grounded on a sandbar. Mr. Teal and his men spent 3 1/2 hours swinging passengers and crew members from the ship's ladder to a Coast Guard boat which then transferred them to other vessels in the area.
Though he retired as warrant officer, Mr. Teal was known to his friends as 'captain' because of his position as head of the station.
Mr. Teal was born on Block Island, Oct. 25, 1873, a son of the late Joseph H. and Margaret E. (Ball) Teal. He was a member of Atlantic Lodge, F. & A.M., of Block Island.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Nellie (Corbett) Teal; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Midgley of Saylesville; a brother, Joseph H. Teal of Riverside; a sister, Mrs. Hannah Jaixen of Block Island and three grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the J. H. Williams and Co. Funeral Home, 210 Taunton avenue East Providence.
Burial will be in Pocasset Cemetery, Cranston."
