Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of count Ferdinando Sanminiatelli Zabarella and Leopolda Pescatori di Peccioli, Alessandro Sanminiatelli Zabarella entered seminary in Pisa, later moving to Rome, where he pursued his studies at the Almo Collegio Capranica, the Roman Seminary, La Sapienza University and the Pontifical Academy of Ecclesiastical Nobles. Ordained priest in Pisa in September 1863, he was named privy chamberlain supernumerary in 1867, privy chamberlain participantium the following year, canon of the chapter of the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica and privy almoner of His Holiness on July 15, 1874. Named Grand Almoner of His Holiness, he received his episcopal consecration at the early age of thirty four with the titular archbishopric see of Tiana from Pope Pius IX. Assigned as president of the Vatican Judicial Commission on August 23, 1887 and auditor general of the Apostolic Chamber on the following November 29, he was transferred to the titular Latin Patriarchate of Constantinople on June 22, 1899. Created cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in the consistory of June 19, 1899 and reserved in pectore, his name was published in the consistory of April 15, 1901, receiving the title of Ss. Marcellino e Pietro. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals between June 22, 1903, and March 27, 1905, the Cardinal died in Monte Castello on November 24, 1910, aged seventy, and lies buried at the Campo Verano Cemetery in Rome.
