" Mildred Holmes

Mildred Irene "Babe" Holmes, October 20, 1917 - January 25, 1996. On January 25, 1996 our loving and devoted mother, Mildred "Babe" Holmes passed away quietly in her sleep at Kaiser Hospital, Vallejo. Babe was born October 20, 1917 to Wirt and Helen White in Napa and was raised on the family ranch in Wooden Valley.

Descendant of one of the earliest Napa Valley settlers, Babe possessed that strong pioneer spirit and determination to live quite comfortably in the rustic countryside east of St. Helena for the past 34 years. The great-granddaughter of John C. Wooden, founder and settler of Wooden Valley, Babe Holmes is survived by her daughter Helen Shelton and her five sons, Michael, Tom, Peter, David and Robert. In addition she is survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Babe was a 1935 graduate of Napa High School and enjoyed the monthly luncheons with her fellow alumni. She was married in 1938 to Earl Holmes who predeceased her in 1971. Together they were actively involved in local rodeos and horseman's groups in and around Napa County. Her greatest joy in life was her family and we all miss her endless love, dedication and support. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 29 at Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel, 623 Coombs St., Napa. The private interment will be in the Wooden-Farley Cemetery in Wooden Valley immediately following the services. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Meals on Wheels, 1820 Jefferson St., Napa, CA, 94559."
