Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he helped organize the 14th Brooklyn Regiment and was commissioned Colonel in command in April 1861. In July 1861, he led the 14th Brooklyn at the Battle of Bull Run and was severely was wounded. After recovering from his injuries, he distinguished himself leading a brigade at the Battle of Gettysburg, in July 1863. In June 1864, he was appointed US Provost Marshall of the 3rd District, New York and for his actions at Gettysburg, was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March 1865. After the war, he was active with Veteran Affairs and the 14th Brooklyn Association, helping veterans with pension funds.
