SPONSELLER, Robert M. Age 56 of Fairborn, passed away Friday, January 9, 2009 at Greene Memorial Hospital. A former Fairborn fire chief, Mr. Sponseller was born January 20, 1952 in Washington, D.C., the son of Robert J. Sponseller and Matilda Bush. In addition to being fire chief, Mr. Sponseller had a lengthy record of civic involvement. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the Ohio Fire Chiefs' Association, the Greene and Montgomery County Fire Chiefs' Associations, Fairborn Rotary, Troop 118 of the Boy Scouts, and the National Fire Chiefs' Association. Mr. Sponseller was a founding member of the Greene County Arson Task Force, an honorary member of Box 21, and he served on the Fairborn Police Auxiliary for five years, as well as the Enon Police Department. He taught at the Greene County Career Center, served as an emergency room technician at Greene Memorial Hospital, was a coroner's assistant, and received a lifetime achievement award from the Greene County EMT Association. Mr. Sponseller had been a member of the Abiding Christ Lutheran Church since 1981, where he was on the church's governing board, the administration team, and where he served as sexton and facility manager. He was preceded in death by his father, a daughter (Melissa Sue), and his father-in-law. Survivors include his wife of more than 36 years, Jean Waller Sponseller of Fairborn; his mother, Matilda Sponseller of Xenia; a daughter, Heather (Shane) Fox of Fairborn; a son, Christopher (Nicole) Sponseller of Fairborn; a sister, Sherri (Bill) May of Fairborn; a brother, Jeffrey Sponseller of Bellbrook; mother-in-law Bernice Waller of Cedarville; three sisters-in-law: Linda (John) Rader of Xenia, Laura Waller of Xenia, and Charlotte Jacobs of Fairborn; five grandchildren: Mark Sponseller, Braden and Ethan Fox, and Ashley and Gregory Foreman. Family and friends may call from 5-8pm Thursday, January 15, 2008 at the Abiding Christ Lutheran Church, 326 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn. The funeral service will be held at the church at 11am on Friday, January 16, with interment to follow at Massie Creek Cemetery in Cedarville. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Juvenile American Diabetes Association or to the Abiding Christ Lutheran Church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Burcham Funeral Home, 119 E. Main Street, Fairborn.
