Henry appeared in the 1850 U.S. Census for Mentor, Lake County,Ohio as 21 years old, residing in the household of his father, Frederick, 53, a farmer, and mother, Anna, 48, and a sister, Lucia, 15, all born in Ohio. Henry appeared in the 1860 U.S. Census, 31 years old, farming in Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio with his wife, Lucena, and four children, all born in Ohio.

Henry enlisted in Company F, 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 30, 1862, although his name does not appear in the regimental roster in the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, volume 2. He was captured at Dumfries, Virgnia, December 27, 1862. Apparently paroled, he died at Camp Parole, at Annapolis, Maryland of "brain fever," March 26, 1863, at 34 years of age. Rank: Private. He was originally buried at Ashgrove Cemetery in Grave 113 until moved to Annapolis National Cemetery after the war.

His widow applied for a pension, July 1, 1864, which was issued as Certificate #51300. She would lose the pension when, by 1870, she married Almon Shattuck.

Henry's name is inscribed on the monument of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, located at Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
