He was born, we think, in Island Creek section of Duplin Co., and per census records, 1850 & 1860, lived in that area. Previous census did not list names of household, only head of household. So far, no records or grave locations found of his parents.

He married Barbara Boney in 1848, but Duplin Co., has no records of marriage. The 1850 census shows one child, James D, age 1.
The 1870 census indicates the family moved to New Hanover county.
Samuel became very close friends with Joseph L. Winner and spent many days with him on Carolina Beach.
He owned almost 1900 acres of land on the mainland, part of Myrtle Grove Sound, and the beach property, per Platt map book LD-A, page 461. Following pages detail that which was distributed to his heirs after his death in 1888.
He is buried next to Joseph L Winner in the Winner Cemetery on Carolina Beach.
His wife, Barbara, moved to Florida around 1890 along with several of her children. She lived in Wuchula Fl and died in 1907 and is buried in the Wachula Cemetery.
