Elias E. Maes passed away on Jan. 7, 2009, at the Vista Care Unit of Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., following a sudden brief illness. He was born March 12, 1913 in Maes, N.M., and was a lifelong resident of Las Vegas, N.M., and a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Elias enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching sporting events and reading. He was a skilled mechanic and carpenter. As a young man he participated with numerous dance band groups as a saxophone player.

He was an amiable and charitable man and took special interest in community issues.

He is preceded in death by his wife Mary F. Maes, parents Andres Maes and Flaminia Roybal of Maes, N.M.; brothers, Robert and Felix Maes; son, Luciano Dennis Maes and grandson, Kodi Rae Maes.

Elias is survived by his sons: Robert Maes and wife Lucy of Rio Rancho, N.M., Leo Maes and wife Barbara of Española, N.M.; daughters: Dolores Martinez and husband Arthur of Las Vegas, N.M., Mabel Cantrell and husband Don of Las Vegas, N.M.; his sister Adeline Gonzales, of Las Vegas, N.M.; sisters-in-law Flora Romero of Las Vegas, N.M., Rita Maes of La Junta, Colo., and Juanita Aragon of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren, Tina Leyba and husband Jackie of Albuquerque, Arthur Martinez of Albuquerque, Don Cantrell of Albuquerque, Jason Cantrell of Las Vegas, N.M., Roberto Maes and wife Lena of Albuquerque, Cristal Maes of Rio Rancho, Alex and Sara Maes of Espanola, and Dennis Maes of Las Vegas, N.M.; five great-grandchildren, Marissa and Sonia Leyba, Deminika and Arianna Maes, Daniel Maes, Luciano Maes and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A rosary was recited at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church on Friday evening.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Saturday morning also at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, with burial at the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Dennis Maes, Roberto Maes, Don Cantrell, Jason Cantrell, Arthur Martinez and Daniel Maes.
