Lorraine was born on April 12, 1922 at Crookston, the daughter of Paul and Martha (Johnson) Chappius. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture. For a short while, Lorraine worked at the Red Owl Grocery Store on Main Street. On October 19, 1943, she was united in marriage to Delmont "Del" Cournia at St. Anne's Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Crookston where together they farmed and raised their two children, Robert and Barbara. Lorraine enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading and traveling. After retiring from farming, Lorraine and Del enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Arizona from 1979 until 1999 when Del's health would no longer allow them to travel.
