SSgt. Thompson was a career United States Marine Corps veteran. He served from October 1927 to December 1953 and was a China Marine, a WW2 and Korean War veteran. He served on the USS Presidio (PA-88), USS Bollinger (APA-234), USS Adair (APA-91), USS Chaumont, USS Henderson, and the USS Sitka. He was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal, Marine Corps Expeditionary medal, China Service medal, American Defense Service medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, American Campaign medal, WWII Victory medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar with one bronze star. He was also awarded the Marksman badge, the Sharpshooter badge and the Expert Rifleman's badge.
