Maria (Polly) Stryker was born Mar 12, 1775 and was baptised Apr 2, 1775 in the Hilsborough Dutch Reformed Church, Millstone, Somerset County, New Jersey. She died Jun 25, 1856 in Somerville, Bridgewater Township, Somerset County, New Jersey at the age of 81.
She married Abraham C. Brokaw on Jan 8, 1792 at her house in Hillsborough Township. The Reverend John Duryea, pastor of the Reformed Dutch Church of Raritan at Somerville, performed the ceremony. Abraham C. Brokaw was born Mar 2, 1773, the son of Caleb Brokaw and Jane Van Nostrand Brokaw. He died on Jul 23, 1826 at the age of 53.
In 1823, Maria, Abraham, and seven of their children moved to Ohio, leaving three married children in New Jersey. Their son Caleb preceeded them to Ohio. After 2½ years, Abraham died and was buried in Ohio. Maria returned to New Jersey with five of the children that same year, lived with her son Simon in 1853, and was living with her daughter Maria at the time of her death in 1856.
Upon her return to New Jersey, the Orphans Court of Somerset County in Jan, 1827, divided Abraham Brokaw's estate, including his farm at Hillsborough inherited from his father, among his children.
On Nov 19, 1852, Maria applied for bounty land for which she bacame entitled under the Act passed Sep 28, 1850. She obtained the land warrant number 95.043 for forty acres. She sold the land.
On Jul 2, 1855, she again applied for bounty land for which she believed she was entitled under the Act approved Mar 3, 1855.
Maria Stryker wrote her will Jun 7 1856, two weeks before she died. Inventory was taken Jul 11, 1856. It is recorded as 3545R, Somerset County, on file in the Archives and History Bureau, New Jersey State Library.
"In the Name of God Amen. I Maria Brokaw of the Township of Bridgewater County of Somerset and State of New Jersey being Weak in body but of Sound mind and memory & understanding for which blessing I do thank my Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ my beloved Saviour do make and Publish this my last Will and testament in manner following that is to say
"First it is my Will and I hereby order & direct that all my just debts and Funeral expenses Including a suitable Head Stone be duly paid as soon as the same can conveniently be done after my decease
"Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Maria Wife of James Hart My Bed Bedstead and one suit of Bed Clothing suitable for the Same.
"Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Maria Wife of James Hart and my Daughter Corniela Wife of Henry Stilwell all my wearing Apparel the same to be euqeally Between them divided share and share alike.
"Item I give and bequeath unto my said Daughters Maria and Corneila all the Ballance of my Bedding of all and Every Kind to be equeally divided between them and also the Ballance of my Furniture share and share alike.
"Item I give and bequeath unto my said Daughters Maria Wife of James Hart and Cornilia Wife of Henry Stilwell for their own . . . use the Ballance of my Property of all and every Kind the same to be paid to my said Daughters and their individual recepts shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executor herein after Named
