US Congressman. He was raised in Henrietta, Texas and received bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Texas, afterwards practicing law, first in Vernon and later in Wichita Falls. From 1933 to 1937 he was District Attorney of the Texas forty-sixth judicial district. In 1938 Gossett was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat. He was reelected six times and served from January 1939 until his resignation in July 1951. Gossett was one of the southern Democrats in Congress who led opposition to easing immigration quotas as displaced persons, especially Jews, attempted to relocate to the US after World War II. After leaving Congress he returned to practicing law and served as Counsel for the Texas Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1968 he became a Judge on the Criminal District Court in Dallas, where he served until reaching mandatory retirement in 1976, when he took senior status and served part time on the bench until 1985.
