Son of Benjamin Smiley Zachry and Mary W Zachry.
Husband of Missouri Jane Stewart.
He enlisted in Company H. Third Arkansas Cavalry, Army of Tennessee; he took part in most of the battles of that army; while fighting at Sandersville, Georgia during a battle with Sherman's army, he was wounded in the ankle 26 Nov 1864. Unable to continue in the service James returned to find much of his property destroyed and stock gone but he soon resumed as a successful farmer and owned a steam cotton gin. He was a deputy sheriff of the county, was a member and representative of several farm organizations and also served as deputy US Marshall.
