~MY ANCESTOR~

The son of JOHN & JOANNE (JORDAN) KITCHELL, he was baptized on October 25, 1601. (NEHGR 55:213-214-Parish Register of Rolvenden). On July 21, 1632, he married MARGARET SHEAFFE in co. Kent, England where he owned property in Rovenden, co. Kent, England that he sold before leaving for New England. The Kitchell and Scheaffe families came together on the good ship, ARABELLA, that was anchored in New Haven Colony, with the Whitfield Company in 1639 (led by Rev. Henry Whitfield), where they settled in Guilford. Mr. Robert Kitchell had the first signer of the Guilford Compact aboard ship in which the Puritans agreed to remain together. On September 29, 1639, he was one of the six planters who signed the deed with Squaw Sachem, Shaumpishuh, to purchase the land between New Haven & Saybrook plantation called Menuncatuck (Guilford). In 1646/7, he was one of the appraisers of the estate of Francis Bushnell of Guilford. He served as an attorney for Mr. Sheaffe in court on May 4, 1650 when Mr. Bishop brought damages against Mr. Shaeffe due to his hogs damaging Mr. Bishop's corn. Robert Kitchell, Wm. Chittenden & Geo. Hubbard were elected duputies for Guilford on June 11, 1660 ("One Bassett Family in America, p. 203-4). Mr. Kitchell was elected to be commissioner at Guilford (Public Rec. of the Colony of Conn, Vol. II, p. 32-May 10, 1666)

Robert Kitchell's son, Samuel, married on December 2, 1666, Grace Pierson, daughter of Rev. Abraham Pierson. Rev. Pierson was asked by the "Fundamentalists" to find a new home for them and their church. He left his church in Branford in 1667 and went to Newark, New Jersey asking his family to join him. Robert Kitchell was one who reponded to his request and removed to Newark with some of his family, where he purchased land in and around Newark from the Indians. In the history of Newark, he was called "the benefactor of Newark". The Kitchell family grew into a large & influencial family in New Jersey.

After his death, his wife, Margaret, removed to Greenwich, Conn. where she died in 1682.
