Iris Ann Lincoln was ten years old when her mother died in childbirth in 1899. Her education ended that year, and the children were sheltered by different families. Her father remarried, but the family did not reassemble. Iris married William Oliver Stratton at the age of 18, and had nine children, seven of whom lived to adulthood. Widowed by Oliver's death in 1929, she provided for her children by working as a field laborer, renovating houses for resale, and selling fine crafts made by her and her children. Several of her children went to college, urged by Iris, who felt acutely the loss of her own education. As adults they formed a large, extended closeknit family along with other relatives. In about 1941, she married Jesse Small, who became "Dad" and "Grandpa" to her family. Jesse died in the early 60s, and is buried with his first wife. Iris was buried next to her first husband. Her gravestone reflects her relationship with her two husbands but unfortunately, does not carry her maiden name.
