Hardwood lumber dealer and engaged in the laundry business. He purchased the Huff & Grover Laundry in 1894 and became sole owner of the Hutchens Laundry, the largest in Wabash at that time.
He worked closely with W.C. Mills in the founding of the Wabash Community Service. In 1926 Hutchens organized the Wabash Community Band which used the laundry building one night each week for rehearsals.
Married Lulu Coppock Jan. 25, 1904. They had two children: Harry J. and Howard Tillman
