Nancy Ann Goss, wife of Walter D. Newman, was the daughter of Charles Simeon Hamilton Goss and Mahala A. Smith of Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Goss and Mary Ann Tolbert. Her maternal grandparents were David and Margaret Smith of Tallapoosa Co., AL.

Nancy Ann Goss was a sister to Mary Goss, who is buried in an unmarked grave, Marina Serena Goss Allen, a.k.a. Rena Allen, Elizabeth Emily Goss Welch, and Mahaley S. Goss Grimes, are buried in marked graves. They are all daughters of Charles Simeon Hamilton Goss and Mahala Smith.

Her husband, Walter D. Newman, died in a hospital on Jan. 3, 1863, from wounds received on the field of battle, near Staunton, Virginia, during the Civil War.
